Issue #61 - "They Follow U Follow Them" by Éric L Farrell - October 2007

Introduction: The question this poem should leave you with is, do you want to follow the crowd or do you want to follow the truth?
(Note: “They Follow U Follow Them” isn't the same poem as my “They Follow You Follow Them”)

THEY FOLLOW U FOLLOW THEM" by Éric L Farrell

You used to follow the preacher
Now the preacher's following you
And who are you following?
You're following the crew

Now those who want the truth most can't find it
Cause those who need the truth most are blinded
Blinded by the lights of celebrity stages
Blinded by the hype of best seller pages
Drowned by the shallowness as the latest fad rages
We can't ever seem to get past the first stages
Because whenever we do, it's on to something new
Out with the old and in with the news of the latest release on the
TV tube, Internet, and billboards, with 10 million views on
YouTube or whatever's got the most reviews

It's a popularity contest and that's how we choose which morals we keep and which morals we lose
Star status is validation and worth more than values
If you got valet parking, you ain't got nothing to prove
Forget the Bible: If you got status, you can make your own rules

God loves us, but He's probably thinking, "man, they some fools!
They believe in this stuff too and even teach it in they schools"

Here's the monumental situation we're now facing:
We've learned the fundamentals and we've gotten complacent
With hearing the same message over and over like a broken record reiteration
And we still ain't learned nothing new after 14 generations

Why?

Because the popular demand in our nation has taught us that it's more financially profitable to remain in spiritual stagnation
Which has led to a widespread decline in our spiritual education.

Why?

Because those who were employed to lead our nations with world changing revelations, were all convinced to take unpaid leave and mandatory vacations until public demand for truth grew high enough to sustain such type of operation
Until then, they must go make a living by seeking out a different type of vocation, like prosperity preaching, pop gospel singing, or under a fortune 5 corporation, or appealing to the masses through some other pop culture creation

Because that's what you want, right?

They can't supply without demand.
You understand what I'm saying right?
You wouldn't follow the cashless, but you would follow the masses
And this is where you stand/stayin' right?
So they follow you as you follow them others who follow none other than those in the limelight

If they want to get at you, they gotta attract you by being the people's choice, having a huge following, and wearing some shine-bright
And in order to do that, they gotta chop up the truth (I mean butcher it), water it down, and make that airplane sound like momma used to do when she used to feed you to make it easy for swallowing...
Modify it to make it taste right
And sell it to you as a 30 second sound byte.

RELATED SCRIPTURES

Matthew 7:13-14
13 Enter ye at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that
leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Please continue to read through verse 20)

Luke 12:15-24 (a warning from Jesus)
15 And he said unto them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying 'What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?'
18 And he said, 'This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, soul, thou has much goods laid up for many years; Take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.'
20 But God said unto him, 'Thou Fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: Then whose shall those things be, which thou has provided?'
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
22 And he said unto his disciples, "Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
24 Consider the ravens: For they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; And God feedeth them: How much more are ye better than the fowls?"

1 Timothy 6:5-8
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
(READ verses 3-11 of this chapter.)

other scriptures: Matthew 7:13-20
VOCABULARY from poem:

fundamentals - essentials; basics;

prosperity preaching – preaching a doctrine that focuses mainly on gaining prosperity, usually personal financial wealth, as external evidence of having God's favor. This favor may be preordained, granted in return for prayer asking for such things, or giving money to the preacher (or church) to get a return (also referred to as "sowing a seed"). Prosperity preaching is frowned upon by some believers, as some preachers and their followers grow to be more focused on earthly wealth and material possessions than on salvation and spiritual growth.

revelations – things which are revealed, made known, disclosed;

shine-bright – flashy material possessions or jewelry; bling bling;

VOCABULARY from scripture:

bestow – to store; put in a certain place;

covetousness - root word of covetousness is "covet," meaning to desire what belongs to someone else;

destitute – lacking something necessary;

layeth - store away; put away for future use;

leadeth – leads;

parable – a usually short fiction story told to teach a moral lesson or principle; an allegorical story; parables in the Bible did not contain names of people or real places and Jesus often used parables to publicly teach his disciples lessons using symbolism that others who could hear would not understand; almost as if talking in code;

thereat – there; at that place;
